Well, here I am, CrossFit featured member of the month. I never thought those words would ever come out of my mouth. My name is Jody Buxton and I am a lifetime resident of Lumberton TX. I am married to the most beautiful woman in the world, Keri Jo, and we have three amazing kids. First Nate is 21 years old, then we have Addalee who is 12 and we have little Brylee Jo and she is 10. The kids keep us very active and we are really enjoying this season of our life. This little family unit is what Both KJ and I had always wanted. I am a Registered Nurse (RN) and I have been a nurse for over 20 years. You would think that being a nurse and seeing all the things I have seen through the years, that I would have always been working on being healthy. That statement could not be further from the truth. I have spent the majority of my life with unhealthy habits and still have a few that I am working on. I continue to set goals for myself. I was not always “pro” or “team” crossfit. My wife joined about 4 years ago and boy did I give her heck about it. I viewed it as a cult like gym, a place where injuries occur, and basically I had stereotypes already placed in my mind about CrossFit. So, for that reason, 3 years went by and I would continue to hurt my wife’s feelings, week after week, month after month and every time she asked me to go to “friend” day I had a firm NO! I noticed she started not asking me as much anymore. One day she came to me and said she really wanted me there, she wanted her best friend with her and told me just think about it and don’t say no right away this time. I thought about it that day for awhile and I told her I would go and try. The next morning came and KJ was so excited that I could not back out at that point, so I went. Well, you know what? I made it through and I didn’t get hurt, nobody had me do anything crazy and I had fun… Later that day I bought a punch card and decided to try a few more times. Coach Shelby and Coach Devon were amazing to me and supported me as I was trying to learn all the movements and build endurance. The whole 6am crew was awesome! 5am would high five me as I was coming in and they were leaving. I thought to myself, this is why KJ has loved coming here for the last 3 years… I used that punch card up over the next few weeks then I joined. I started building friendships that developed into holding each other accountable for not putting in gym time (right, Chase?) and supporting each other. It didn’t take long before I was hooked! I am 43 years old and getting into better shape than I was at 30 years old. After few weeks of going 2-3 days a week, I started seeing some progress in my energy levels and in body shape. Then after a few months, I started getting compliments from other people as well. I began my CrossFit journey almost 30 pounds heavier than I am today. My goal is not to be an elite athlete but to make continued progress and live a healthier life for my family. I am going to see some new personal records in my future and most importantly, I know I am building a healthier, stronger body. I’m a stronger husband, a stronger father, and just a stronger man in many different aspects of my life. I do owe a lot of thanks to my wife for hanging out by my side and pushing me because I wouldn’t be a member of the gym or the man I am today without her. So, if you have someone in your life that is encouraging you, don’t ignore them, just get out there and go give it a shot!
